And here's the *other* thing: The native Epson software opens with no difficulty and recognizes the scanner. But I really want to use the multi-pass capacity of my Vuescan. Which I paid for, after all...
Question: Q:
And so ends the quest I had for good scanner software. Apparently it still doesn't exist on Mac OS X.

VueScan is an application for scanning documents, photos, film, and slides on Windows, macOS, and Linux. VueScan supports over 5600 scanners from 42 manufacturers - even when there isn’t a driver available from the manufacturer.
Some components scattered around the system cannot be thoroughly deleted…

"Does a great job with old scanners." VueScan is claimed to be the most popular scanner software in the world with a customer base of over 130,000. And, once you try it (It's demoware), you'll understand why. It works with many types of scanner, is easy, even fun to use, and doesn't cost a whole lot. Not only that, VueScan is very actively developed, with frequent version updates keeping it abreast of the latest new hardware innovations and refining its performance. OK, so I downloaded VueScan. It came in a disk image, and on it was a single folder inside which was a single application package. Despite the slight weirdness of the extra folder, the fact that VueScan was a simple drag-and-drop install boded well for the application. But when I launched it, I was greeted with this horror of a window: With VueScan, users can do simple fixing on the images such as brightness and contrast, RGB settings, modifying the color balance and other tweaks you can do on the images. I was wondering if you found a solution. Complex interface, inability to double-click a preferences file to launch, 64-bit version is very awkward to download. If your scanner manufacturer doesn't provide updated drivers that are compatible with current operating systems you may need to look at third-party scanning solutions. These third-party utilities are dedicated scanning solutions, and they are more appropriate for critical or high-volume scanning. Improved support for Image Capture scanners on Mac OS X
